Vittore Carpaccio’s early 16th century paintings celebrate Venice at the turn of the 15th century, when La Serenissima dominated a vast maritime-commercial empire and flourished as a great centre of culture. Within fantastic settings enriched with details and references to his extraordinary city – both with religious subjects and civil works – his masterpieces give us the very essence of “Venetian-ness”.

The last time an exhibition was dedicated to this painter was in 1963 at the Doge’s Palace. Today’s exhibition focuses on the reconstruction of the painter’s artistic and creative journey, from the earliest works of his youth to the lofty works of his maturity, also enriched by a substantial nucleus of autograph drawings.
