Palazzo Contarini is an exquisite, late Gothic building. However, what makes it such a popular attraction today was the addition by its architects, in 1499, of an amazing, external ‘bovolo’ (snail-shell) stairwell enclosed in a cylinder perforated like lace.

The staircase is rare gem of Venetian architecture, just a few steps away from Campo San Manin: a combination of Renaissance, Gothic and Byzantine elements. The architectural beauty of the stairwell, combined with the view that can be enjoyed from its top, is well worth a visit.

Even if the building is a private palace, you can still visit parts of it and the staircase by purchasing a ticket on the ufficial website.
