The exhibition “Titian 1508. At the Beginning of a Luminous Career” recounts the artist’s birth through 17 autograph works and a dozen comparisons with paintings, engravings and drawings by authors contemporary with him such as Giorgione, Sebastiano del Piombo, Albrecht Dürer and Francesco Vecellio.
Today Titian is recognized as an undisputed genius of art, but his rise occurred in a context dominated by already famous painters whom he managed to surpass through his talent. In 1508 the young Titian, almost 20 years old, attracted collective interest through important public undertakings. It was precisely in 1508, in fact, that he was for all intents and purposes beginning a public career that would, shortly thereafter, transform him into the official painter of the Serenissima Republic and into an indispensable reference point for the history of art in the following centuries. The itinerary recounts the artist’s extraordinary ability to quickly assimilate different cultural components, and to direct the Venetian pictorial language toward a mixture of naturalism and classicism.
Many works are rediscovered thanks to new research, scientific investigation and restoration.
