The 59th International Art Exhibition will be open to the public until November 27th 2022 in the Giardini, at the Arsenale, and at various sites around Venice.

It welcomes 213 artists from 58 countries: 26 Italians, 180 first-time participants, 1433 works and objects on display, and 80 new productions. Five countries are participating in the Art Biennale for the first time: the Republic of Cameroon, Namibia, Nepal, the Sultanate of Oman and Uganda. The Exhibition is titled “The Milk of Dreams” and is curated by Cecilia Alemani – first Italian woman to hold this position – who is currently Director and Chief Curator of High Line Art, a programme of public art of the urban park in New York, and was the past curator of the Italian Pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2017.

CURIOSITIES

  • For the first time in the over 127-year history of this Venetian institution, the Biennale includes a preponderant majority of female artists and non-binary people.
  • The exhibition was conceived and realised in a period of great instability and uncertainty. The past and present edition coincided with the onset and ongoing continuation of the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced La Biennale to postpone this edition by a year – an event that had only occurred in the past during the First and Second World Wars.
  • This year sees the birth of the first edition of “Biennale College”, a project dedicated to
the training and support of young people in all artistic sectors.
